Everyone has the potential to become a good leader. We don't subscribe to a 'you got it or you don't' mentality. Leaders aren't born, they're made. Through the building of trust, they can become great.

Study after study has shown that trusted leaders are exponentially more productive, more successful and more impactful to the organizations they work for. The great ones can single-handedly shape history and become true visionaries and difference-makers within their organizations.

The ability to create trust comes from the traits within oneself and impacts their effectiveness in their relationships, their roles, their responsibilities, and ultimately in their results. The Work Effects has found that there are five core traits required to building trusted leaders : called BASICTM virtues. If these are practiced by a leader, and in-turn exist in the organization they lead, the leader will thrive:

  1. Beneficial Partnerships - the leader's capacity to foster collaborative relationships. To collaborate is to "co-labor" and work in an interdependent fashion to achieve common ends.

  2. Aligned Emotions - the leader's emotional maturity including knowing one's passions, wants and needs, and the emotional states of followers.

  3. Sustained Determination - the inner strength to initiate action in the face of obstacles, not shrink in the face of resistance, and to sustain momentum in the face of adversity.

  4. Intellectual Flexibility - the capacity to see and adapt to the world accurately with the help of others.

  5. Character - one's moral integrity, which is the inner strength to live in accordance with high moral standards.

The burden of building and sustaining a trusted organization falls heavily on these leaders. To improve their organization, leaders have to take the first steps to build trust within themselves, their colleagues, employees, customers and all organizational constituents.

Within any organization, trust isn’t a constant. It is in flux. Either you are adding to or subtracting from the level of organizational trust. Vigilance must be given to any trust-building effort and it can only be demonstrated through consistent long-term actions. Whereas a trust breach can happen in the blink of an eye. By gaining insight into the traits that drive trust, a leader is able to identify the impact of their habits and allow them to make small adjustments that unleash their ability to shine.
